Under greenhouse conditions cultivars Davis, IAC 73-228, PI 227.687, PI 171.451, and PI 229.358 of soybean were compared. PI 171.451 showed lower dry weight of stem in relation to Davis. Higher pod numbers produced by PI 227-687, IAC 73-228, and PI 229. 358 as compared to Davis were observed. Cultivars PI 227.687 and IAC 73-228 produced larger seed numbers. A larger weight of 100 seeds in Davis, PI 229.358, and PI 171. 45I cultivars was observed. The last two cultivars are sources of resistance against pests of soybean. |

Seven coral reef survey methods were compared in an experimental plot of 100 m² on a Caribbean shelf reef off southwest Puerto Rico. This area was mapped in detail by means of underwater photography and in situ drawings, in order to provide an objective standard against which to test the results obtained by the different survey methods. Minimal survey area was determined, and minimal sampling time deduced for one of the most laborious methods. Two 45-minute periods (i.e. 1.6 X minimal time) were chosen arbitrarily as the standard time alotted to each method. Three survey criteria were chosen: number of species observed, relative coverage (in %) and population densities (in colonies m²). The results of the latter two methods were compared to real values (as... |

The production function approach has been one of the two main ex-post procedures used to estimate the rate of return to agricultural research. A critical part of estimating the marginal internal rate of return (MIRR) is the procedure adopted to spread the benefits of research through time. Past studies using this approach have given only brief consideration to this computational procedure. The objective in this study was to review the different computational procedures used and, then, using cross-section production function estimates for U.S. agriculture, determine whether the MIRR estimates are sensitive to the computational procedure used. The results from this comparison indicate a large range in the estimates. The implication, then, is that careful... |

This article discusses the application of a quadratic programming model to the bond and note participation decision of a Cooperative Farm Credit Bank. The model generates an efficient frontier of bond and note portfolios from which a bank can choose. The composition of these portfolios depends upon the expected cost and variance-covariance of cost for the bond and note activities, debt needs, and the debt policy constraints of a bank. The results indicate that the interest rate risk of various bond and note issues should be considered when making debt participation decisions. |

The life-cycle of the harpacticoid copepod <i>Tisbe furcata</i> (Baird, 1837) at 18°C was studied quantitatively. Stage durations were determined by two different methods, using synchronous cohorts. Combined nauplius stages last for 80.4h; the successive copepodite stages take 23.0, 23.2, 28.0 (females) to 23.2 (males), 33.4 (females) to 24.2 (males) and 48.8 (females) to 34.7 (males) h, respectively. Females develop more slowly but more synchronously than males. Age-specific survival and fertility rates were used to calculate the stable stage distribution in an exponentially growing population. From life-table data the following demographic parameters were computed: intrinsic rate of natural increase... |

Weeds and fungal diseases cause significant losses to grain crops in Australia. In many cases cultural methods of control are effective. However, it is often difficult for farm decision-makers to select the optimum crop rotation, from an economic point of view, given the technical constraints they face. A decision to plant a particular crop will have implications for both current and future profitability because the current decision will alter the constraints faced by the decision-maker in subsequent periods. Dynamic programming is used to solve the rotation problem faced by grain growers in north-western New South Wales in areas where the weed, wild oats (A vena falua or A vena ludoviciana), and the disease, crown rot (Fusarium graminearum Group I), have... |

Data on net turnoff for small, medium-sized and large cow-calf and small and large size yearling ranches were tested for normality using the Shapiro - Wilk test. The yield data examined were accepted as normally distributed at the alpha = .10 level. The probability of profit for each type of ranch was assessed using normal curve techniques for nine different cost-price alternatives and weather conditions. Yearling cattle ranchers had higher profit probabilities than cow-calf ranchers. Prices received had more influence on profit probabilities than weather conditions. |
